This selection of work stems from a variety of classes or work-related assignments and demonstrates a range of writing skills and styles.
Our group, made up of myself and two others, worked on this class project in order to evaluate the Master of Science Technical Communication Program website at the university of Wisconsin–Stout. This kind of test, although very small-scale, is significant in the field of usability to show the steps necessary to complete a test involving users. As a group we came up with an outline and put together all elements of the proposal for the test, which we completed in following weeks.
One of my tasks in Writing for the Internet was to conduct a genre analysis on a specific product that I owned. I chose this product knowing that there were multiple similar products out there and then compared three articles about the chosen product to each other. I looked critically at what the three review articles fully entailed in terms of audience, content, structure, stylistic features, design and hypertexual elements.
This assignment followed the Genre Analysis and combined elements from that assignment to create a successful review article. This review lists what my product, the Razer Naga gaming mouse, has to offer users in terms of pros, cons, design, customization, performance and cost. After completing the Genre Analysis, putting together information into one complete article was an important final step. It shows that I am able to do research, compile results and write in a professional manner.
This research paper was written for my Critical Writing class and involved forming a contemplative alcohol-related research question, compiling research from annotated bibliographies we put together and forming a well-rounded outline and, eventually, paper. My paper explores how alcohol advertisements use women to sell their products, which causes the association between the sexually appealing image of women with alcohol to create a selling point.
For my Convergent Communications class we had to choose a research topic about the school newspaper, Stoutonia, and look into its history. My group, consisting of myself and three others, wanted to see how opinion and editorial columns over the years affected campus life.
This reflection discusses what it means to be a tutor and gives a few examples of tutorials that stand out to me as having had an positive impact on either the client or myself.
My Structure of English class had me complete this research project on a linguistic element. I chose profanity and insults as my topic, and applied it to video games to see if the language would change when one person was playing compared to playing with another person.
We had a lot of handouts in the Writing Center that we would give to students, but I noticed a lot of students coming in for help with personal statements. I wrote up a document containing key information and some commonly seen tips and tricks so that both students and tutors would have a better idea for how to write one.I took initiative to put this document together even though it was not part of my normal day-to-day job. This document is still being used as a resource in the Writing Center.
This was written for my Creative Writing class. I put a lot of revision work into making sure it was clear for readers and that it stayed true to the original happenings. I had to do a lot of thinking to come up with a meaningful story that would evoke emotion but end on a happy note while still staying within the boundaries for the assignment.
For this assignment I had to pick a sub-culture on campus and complete an ethnography on it. I had to think critically and look at things from an informative perspective for this project. I also had to conduct an observation and interview with someone within this sub-culture. This kind of document shows that I can write professionally and can gather research and compile it in an objective manner.
For my International Technical Communications class we had to choose a target people group and come up with a general cultural profile. I chose the current culture of France. This entailed looking at the language, social characteristics, politics, education, economics, time values, technology, religion and popular culture of French people to gain an understanding of their way of life. This project influenced further usability testing.
